A garter belt, or suspender belt, is a woman's undergarment consisting of an elastic (or similar fabric) piece of cloth worn around the waist, like a girdle, to which garters are attached to hold up stockings. 

Although at one time going out of style, the garter belt is quickly becoming a staple in the vintage-obsessed fashion industry, thanks in part to the iconization of the pin-up girl.  Once full lengthy pantyhose came onto the market, the function of the garter belt was no longer needed.  Now, garter belts are becoming more popular for pure fashion rather than function.
